Floods and landslides occurred in Nepal due to heavy rains that started on September 27 in and around the capital Kathmandu. More than 215 people, including 35 children, are reported to have died in the disasters and dozens are missing. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as reports come in from remote villages.

In Nepal, where the heaviest rainfall in 50 years was experienced, houses, schools and hospitals were damaged. While bridges and roads were flooded due to the rainfall, it was difficult for people to reach each other due to interruptions in telecommunication networks. The government also announced a 3-day break in education.

Nepalese security forces and volunteers have supported search and rescue efforts and rescued more than 4000 people so far.

It is stated that the extreme rains and floods are a result of climate change and that the frequency and severity of disasters have increased due to climate change. Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had also emphasized the climate crisis in his speech at the UN General Assembly held recently.
